Mechanical Systems Controls - Expensive Convenience or Smart Operator?
Energy Management Systems, Building Automation Systems, Direct digital controls, EMS, BAS, DDC, etc. These are all are names used to describe computerized HVAC control systems. The options, capabilities and sophistication can certainly add to the confusion in operating your HVAC system but also make it difficult trying to compare one contractor's offerings from another. However, many of the control features that used to be differentiators or are now commonplace and, in fact, some of the features that used to be considered exotic, are those that building operations and maintenance staff shouldn't be without.
Such as? It used to be that the term DDC controls were synonynous with very expensive, luxury, or government facilities. Now, however, 'Smart' communicating thermostats are available for a little more than the cost of programmable thermostats. Communicating thermostats can be linked together with multi-wire control wiring and along with a network controller can be linked to a website and voila - you now have an economical control system where staff can access a website and remotely monitor equipment and adjust thermostat setpoints for a little more than the cost of high end programmable thermostats.
