Senior Housing Remodeling
Aging seniors are driving a new remodeling trend according to a news release posted by Angie’s List, an online company that matches people with specific services. Angie’s List helps find high quality contractors, service companies and doctors for those that need them.
The news release confirms what we already know, which is that older adults want to remain in their homes indefinitely, and now more of them are taking steps to make that happen resulting in a significant growth in specialized home renovations. This also speaks to the notion that as the Silver Tsunami approaches, we will need to look beyond traditional “bricks and mortar” and new construction, and identify ways to use the resources already available to us. Is this a new niche business model for contractors and architects?
Renovations including retrofitting bathrooms, installing grab bars and handrails throughout a house, and making accommodations for wheelchairs and walkers including installing ramps and lowering electrical switches will allow older adults to age in community. Coupled with technology and community based services, this is a terrific alternative to the very expensive institutional options like a nursing home.
