Alzheimer's Care

In 2009, Ecumen developed and opened nearly 100 units of Memory Care Assisted living. We will open another 150 units in the year 2010 and we don’t anticipate a decline in the development or need for additional Memory Care/Alzheimer’s housing options for older adults anytime in the very near future.

While the need exists for specialized housing alternatives for older adults suffering from memory loss or Alzheimer’s a recent CBS news report indicates that 54% of Americans believe that researchers will find a cure for Alzheimer’s in their lifetime. What does that mean for all of the Alzheimer’s Senior Housing that is being developed and built? At Ecumen, we believe it translates into a smarter design for future convertibility.

A traditional memory care/Alzheimer’s apartment is generally a smaller apartment, usually a studio apartment (320 sq. ft), with a private bathroom, and no individual kitchen. As we design our Alzheimer’s apartments we are looking to the future of health care and are anticipating a cure for this disease. We are designing the rooms for a future conversion into Assisted Living apartments by combining side-by-side smaller studio apartments and converting them into larger one and two bedroom apartments. We stub-in the plumbing and electrical for a future kitchen and additional bathrooms if necessary. While this seems like a lot of work (and money) on the front end, it is really much easier and less expensive to do it during initial construction than later after the building is built and occupied.
