Does the design and layout of memory care housing affect the emotional well-being of the residents? Reading this editorial in the Des Moines Register, it's clear that visits by family members and friends can lift the spirits of someone with dementia and got me thinking about how the design can impact the resident, staff and family members’ emotional well being.

As developers and designers of memory care housing, we understand that the physical environment will have an impact on the emotional health of the residents, the staff and visiting family members. Things to consider when designing a memory care community: Is there adequate lighting so that the place seems bright and cheery, not foreboding? What are the natural light levels? Remember Vitamin D is critical to everyone’s emotional and physical well being. Is there the opportunity to go outside? Are there quiet places to relax, reflect and simply be alone? Are there places to be with a group and participate in activities? A good developer/design team will consider the consequences of design decisions on emotional health when designing a successful memory care project.
